Obituary
Evelyn Augusta Minnie (Schroeder) Schmeling was born September 22, 1919, on the home farm near Corvuso, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Elsie (Dallman) Schroeder. She was baptized at home on October 19, 1919, by Rev. A. Baur, and confirmed in her faith on May 19, 1935, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills by Rev. A. C. Krueger. Evelyn grew up in Cedar Mills Township where she attended District 83 School and St. John’s Lutheran School through 8th grade, graduating on July 2, 1935. She eventually moved into an apartment in Hutchinson, and worked at the Hutch Café, and for two years in the kitchen at the Hutchinson Hospital.
On October 5, 1941, Evelyn married Ernest William Schmeling. When Ernie was discharged from the Army, they lived in Evelyn’s apartment until moving to the farm in 1945. To their union, eight children were born: Loren, Lornette, Lordell, Lorallen, Lorgene, Lorlane, Lorchelle, and Lorvern. Evelyn had her hands full raising her family and helping with the farm. She provided many meals to neighbors and family on thrashing, hay baling, and other work days. Together, Evelyn and Ernie farmed for 30 years until Ernie’s death in 1975.
In 1983, Evelyn moved to Cosmos. She was active in the Senior Center and worked at the Cosmos Nutrition Center for two years. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, and active in the American Legion events and meals. Evelyn was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, and taught release time for two years. She was a blood donor and gave more than three gallons in her lifetime.
Evelyn loved to bowl, gaining many trophies. She bowled on several 1st place teams: Peterson’s Dairy in 1982, Arnold’s Angels in 1983 and 1986, Stan’s Foods in 1984 and 1990. Her high series was 509. Evelyn did a lot of traveling, visiting almost every state, and traveled overseas to Europe. Visiting the Holy Land was the dream of her life. She enjoyed crocheting and ceramics, and loved to play cards, especially Bridge and Pinochle. She was a “good winner.” She attended many of her grandchildren’s softball games. Evelyn remained active in spite of her ailments and age, getting into a paddleboat at age 86, and traveling to Grand Marais at almost 95 for the Evelyn Schmeling family reunion.
In February of 2013, Evelyn moved into The Oaks Assisted Living in Hutchinson. On Monday, March 27, 2017, Evelyn passed away there, having reached the age of 97 years. Blessed be her memory.
