Robert “Bob” Sandahl, age 94, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Prairie View of Hector, Minnesota.
Graveside Service at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Askov, Minnesota, will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. Military Honors will be provided by the Jens H. Jensen Legion Post 423.
Visitation will be Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Hughes-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hector from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
Memorials in memory of Bob may be designated to Renville County Hospice, 611 E. Fairview Ave, Olivia MN 56277.
Robert Kortbek Sandahl was born March 18, 1920, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Christian and Valborg (Larsen) Sandahl. He grew up in Askov, Minnesota, where he attended school, graduating from the Askov High School. Robert served his country in the 307th Army Air Force from January 27, 1943 to October 20, 1945, with the 446th Bombardment Group.
On February 15, 1949, Bob was united in marriage to Janice Lokken in Newfolden, Minnesota. They lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and made their home in Hector, Minnesota in 1968. In 1977, Bob, Janice, and daughter Michelle moved to northern Minnesota. After Bob’s retirement in 1986, they returned to Hector.
Bob had a long, diversified career including John Deere in Moline, Illinois, Northern Pump in Minneapolis, MN State Highway Patrol, Lakehead Pipeline, Patz Company pilot in Wisconsin, Northwest Airlines Mechanic, pilot and mechanic for Harold Erickson, co-owner of RoyalAire in Hector, mail carrier in Hector and Sandstone, Minnesota, airport manager in Orr, Minnesota. Bob was a flight instructor and certified inspector for many years.
Bob was a member of the 446th Bombardment Group of the Minnesota Chapter of the 8th Air Force, and the Jens H. Jensen American Legion Post #243 in Askov, Minnesota. He also belonged to the Hector Masons Lodge 158. Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church in Hector. His joys included aviation, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.
On July 16, 2014, Bob passed away at his home at Prairie View of Hector, having reached the age of 94 years, 3 months, 28 days. Blessed be his memory.
Bob is survived by his Children: Cynthia Schanil and her Husband Tom of Hector, Karen Neuman of Hector, Dennis Sandahl and his Wife Ronitta of Hartford, South Dakota, and Michelle Sandahl and her Wife Michele Johnson of Killeen, Texas; Grandchildren: Derek Schanil, Jason Schanil and his wife Becky, Jodi Schanil, Chelsea Sandahl, and Jessica Sandahl; Step-Grandchild Andrew Johnson; Great-Grandchildren: Molly Schanil and Dylan Schanil; Sister Esther North and her Husband Ron of Duluth, Minnesota; Nieces, Nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his Wife Janice, his Parents, Christian and Valborg Sandahl, Sisters and Brothers-in-law Elsie and Folmer Hansen, Clara and Darol Fossey, and Ebba and Vic Peterson, Brothers and Sister-in-law, Viggo Sandahl in infancy, and Carl and Luverne Sandahl.
