Alfred Frank Schreiner age 97, of Atwater, formerly of Winthrop, passed away Monday, January 4th, 2016 at the Ecumen Prairie Hills in St. Peter.
Memorial Service will be Friday, January 15th, 2016, 11:00 A.M. at First Lutheran Church in Winthrop with interment in the Winthrop Cemetery. Military Honors by the Winthrop Honor Guard.
Gathering of Family and Friends will be Friday, January 15th, from 9:00 A.M.- 11:00 A.M. at the church.
Obituary
Alfred “Al” Frank Schreiner was born on October 21, 1918, in Winthrop, Minnesota. He was the son of Frank Sr. and Catherine (Lindemeyer) Schreiner. Al was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth. He received his education in Winthrop.
Al entered active military service on February 9, 1942, and served his country in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal World War II. Al was Honorably Discharged on December 9, 1945.
On June 16, 1942, Al was united in marriage to Ethelyn “Edie” Edmund in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, while he was serving in the military. The couple resided in Winthrop from 1945 to 1983, when he and Edie made Diamond Lake their retirement home. Frank Sr. opened the City Meat Market in Winthrop. In 1937, Al’s brother, Frank Jr. took over the business. In 1945, Al joined his brother in the business after serving time in the military. After a few years of being partners, Frank retired and Al took sole ownership, changing the name to Schreiner’s Star Market. In 1980, Al sold the market and retired. The couple was blessed with the birth of three sons, Gerald, Thomas and Steven. Al and Edie shared 56 years of marriage before she passed away on January 10, 1999.
Al was a member of First Lutheran Church in Winthrop and a past member of the Church Board. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #314 and a past member of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce.
Al loved taking care of his home on Diamond Lake. He enjoyed the time he spent with all his friends and neighbors at Diamond Lake. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and caring for his lawn. The last few months were spent making new friends at Ecumen Prairie Hill in St. Peter. He loved spending time with his family.
Al passed away on Monday, January 4, 2016, at the Ecumen Prairie Hills in St. Peter at the age of 97 years. Blessed be his memory.

Steven Schreiner and his wife, Sherry of Florence, AZ;
Six Grandchildren, Jeremy and Jason Schreiner, Jonathan Schreiner and his wife, Melissa, Karrin (Schreiner) Swanson and her husband, Nick, Justin Stimpert and Cassie, Shannon Stimpert and Jeremy;
10 Great-Grandchildren;
One Great-Great-Grandchild;
Special Friend, Joan Kaiser;
Sister-In-Law, Winnifred Schreiner;
Brothers-In-Law, Alton Ahlstrom and Norbert Laing;
Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.
Al was preceded in death by his Parents, Frank Sr. and Catherine Schreiner; Wife, Ethelyn “Edie” Schreiner; Son, Gerald Schreiner; Grandson, Gerald Schreiner, Jr.; Sisters, Dorothy, Delores, and Muriel; Brothers, Walter, Edward and Frank.
