She was baptized at Rosendale United Methodist Church, and confirmed in her faith there on April 15, 1950. Elaine grew up on the family farm in rural Cosmos. She began her education in Litchfield, and transferred to Cosmos. During her school years, Elaine was involved with the Library, Concessions, and F.H.A., and sang with the mixed chorus. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Cosmos High School in 1957.

Elaine and Delbert had shared nearly 40 years of marriage when Delbert passed away on April 4, 1997. Elaine continued living in Cosmos until the last few years when she moved into Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Elaine and Delbert helped organize the Cosmos Rod and Gun Club, and they ran the Black Powder Club. They helped build the Wildlife Park, and started the Wildlife Club in Cosmos. Elaine enjoyed deer hunting, and also gardening. She had hundreds of pen pals she wrote to regularly. Scrapbooking was also a favorite hobby. Housman says
To all the families, Elaine has always been someone that I knew, when I was small, I remember my mom working nights with her. I remember going with my Grandpa Jack to pickup my Grandma Lou from her evening shift, and Elaine was there. And years later, I work with her as well. Often rather stern, and then she would slip out a funny, and we would all get the giggles.?, may prayers and memories, bring you comfort, May she Rest In Peace! Joy (Loveland) Housman and Family
