Obituary
Ruby Elsie (Vath) Milbrett was born on October 9, 1925 at home in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota – she was the sixth of eight children born to William and Elsie (Werner) Vath. She was baptized in faith on December 6, 1925 at the Church of Nazarene in Buffalo Lake. At the age of about three months, Ruby went with her mother and siblings to join her father, two brothers and maternal grandparents already living in Raymondville, Texas. The family lived in Texas for about the next six years before returning to Buffalo Lake.
Ruby graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1944. On June 27, 1945, Ruby was united in marriage to Otto Milbrett Jr., they had one son, Lynn. Ruby and Otto were members of the Zion United Methodist Church in Buffalo Lake. They were engaged in farming in rural Buffalo Lake until Otto’s death in 2003. Ruby and Otto shared 58 years of marriage. After Otto’s death Ruby moved to an apartment in Buffalo Lake. After suffering a stroke she made the move to an assisted living apartment, a second stroke confined her to the nursing home.
Over the years, Ruby and Otto took family vacations to visit with relatives living in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Iowa and Canada. They also made trips to Branson, Missouri, where they enjoyed the entertainment. They would make many road trips throughout Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas just to see how the crops looked. Ruby was a farmer’s wife, helping with field work, raising chickens, ducks, geese, growing a vegetable garden, baking bread and making pies. A special joy in her life was being able to see her grandchildren grow. After Otto’s passing, Ruby enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards or just visiting. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center assisting residents with various activities. She participated in the sewing circle at church, helped serve at funerals and the annual turkey supper. She liked to crochet and would spend countless hours making intricate doilies and table runners until she was no longer able. After enduring the effects of her strokes, Ruby continued to enjoy the activities at the BLHCC, especially all the variations of bingo that gave her a chance to win a nickel, dime or quarter. She appreciated all the care provided for her by the BLHCC staff and enjoyed sharing stories with many of them. Ruby was always delighted when she had the opportunity to see her great-granddaughter Kaley, who she liked to call her little “Sweet Pea”.

I am saddened to hear of Aunt Ruby’s passing. She was my favorite Aunt & my kindred spirit as we are both red heads. I loved visiting with her & Uncle Ott on their farm every summer. Those are some of my best childhood memories. Lynn, you are in my thoughts & prayers for comfort. I know this is hard, but trust that she is with the family in Heaven & there is one great big Vath family reunion & fish fry happening right now! Love to you.

I’ll miss Aunt Ruby. She has always been an important part of my life and family. What special memories I have of those Vath family reunions! My family especially enjoyed when she and Uncle Ott and Lynn visited us in California. She has blessed so many over her lifetime with her grace and love.
